Life Events

Births, deaths and marriages occurring in Western Australia since 1841 are registered in the Western Australian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Registration

The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1998 requires the following:

• That a child's birth is registered within 60 days of the birth and that both parents complete and sign a Birth Registration Form provided to them by the hospital or midwife.
• That a person’s death is registered within 14 days of the date of death.
• The authorised marriage celebrant, within 14 days of the date of marriage, to forward the marriage papers to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages for registration.

Issuing of Certificates

The Registry will issue a birth, death or marriage certificate where:

• you are eligible to receive the certificate
• suitable evidence-of-identity is provided
• fees are paid.
