Beyond the Pale: Bravely Taking on Optic Nerve Pallor

Optic nerve pallor can present a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. While nerve pallor can be subtle and the etiology may not be readily clear, identifying the cause of pallor can help prevent further damage and even save lives in some cases. This one-hour course reviews the anatomy of the optic nerve, how to differentiate glaucomatous from non-glaucomatous optic nerve pallor, various etiologies of nerve pallor, and provides a guide to determine the likely etiology.

Clinical Tips For Visual Field Analysis

Diagnosis of glaucoma and its progression can be a clinical challenge. Visual fields are a standard of care for screening and assessing change, but the tests often contain artifacts that can be misleading. This 1-hour, asynchronous CE course covers interpretation of test results and factors that influence clinical decisions by utilizing many case examples and pertinent literature.

Diabetic Retinopathy Standards of Care Update

The sands of Diabetic Retinopathy management are shifting. Is CSME still a relevant term? Is panretinal photocoagulation the only management option for proliferative diabetic retinopathy? Do optometrists need to refer moderate nonproliferative retinopathy for treatment? And more updates from recent work done by the DRCR Network, which has had a profound impact on monitoring and treatment of patients with diabetic retinopathy.

Fight Against Antibiotics Resistance – Are We a Victim or Accomplice?

Optometrists frequently prescribe antibiotics to treat ocular infection and surface diseases. Optometrists empirically institute therapies in the absence of culture and sensitivity data. Meanwhile, resistance is a well-recognized consequence of inappropriate and regular use of antibiotics. This 1-hour, asynchronous CE course explores the mechanism of resistance and optimal prescribing habit for optometrists.

Myopia Management Online Grand Rounds (4 CE Hours)

Part 1: To effectively integrate the principles of myopia management and recent research finding into patient care, this two-hour course utilizes several typical cases of progressive myopia to illustrate the key components in clinical decision making for the target patient population.

Part 2: This two-hour course uses a case-based approach to myopia control education and will include real patient encounters during the course. Advanced cases will be presented and practitioners will get a comprehensive understanding and reliable interpretation of clinical data.

Ocular Complications of Systemic Medications

This case-based presentation will provide an update on the ocular side effects of common systemic medications. Ocular toxicity from the medications hydroxychloroquine and ethambutol will be discussed, in addition to lesser-known ocular side effects of other medications. Sexually Transmitted Diseases and the Eye

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) can affect the eyes from red eyes to permanent loss of vision. As the rates of STDs are increasing in the United States, it is even more important for the optometrist to add these diseases to their differential. This one-hour course highlights four cases of common STDs and gives the clinician pearls for diagnosis and treatment and management.

On-Demand Course Enrollment Instructions

Our online, asynchronous courses are hosted on the Canvas platform and require you to create and log in to your own Canvas account in order to access the course content.

Here’s how to get started and earn your CE certificate:

1. Go to the CE Course Catalog site and select the course you’d like to enroll in. Look for courses that say “Asynchronous CE” in the description.
2. On the course page, click the “Enroll Now” button.
3. You will be prompted to create an account or sign in with your account. Make sure to create an account with an email address that you use regularly and choose a password that you will remember. You do not have to use a @berkeley.edu email address to create an account.*
4. Complete the enrollment form and payment flow. If you have a promo code, enter the information in the enrollment form.
5. Once enrolled, go to your Student Dashboard and click the “Begin Course” button (you must be signed in to access your dashboard page).
6. On the Berkeley Canvas site, review the course objectives, watch the course lecture, and download the course handout.
7. Complete the multiple-choice post-course test on Canvas. COPE requires a score of 70% or better in order for a certificate of completion to be issued.
8. Once you pass the test, access your certificate on the course module page and trigger a certificate PDF to be emailed to you from optoce@berkeley.edu for your records. You can access all your CE certificates by signing into the certificate dashboard.
9. Complete the post-course survey and let us know any feedback.

*NOTE: If you are a UC Berkeley student, resident, or faculty member with a @berkeley.edu email address, you will need to create a new Canvas account or sign in with a previously created account when you enroll. Even though it is a Canvas site, this is a different site than bCourses! The bCourses site is not accessible to external users and cannot be used for CE courses that are open to public registration. You can use you @berkeley.edu email account to sign up for a CE course, but you will be prompted to create and verify a new account when you register. Once created, you can use this account to register for any CE course on the site.

On-Demand Course Accreditation

Our asynchronous, online lectures meet the “self-study” CE coursework requirements of the California State Board of Optometry. The CA Board accepts up to 20 hours of CE earned through the completion of our accredited asynchronous courses.
